'Taking Al Back Home'
is the story of the last road trip taken together by a father and son to fulfill a dying wish.
Come along for the ride as actor/comedian Bill Kirchenbauer goes on a 2700-mile odyssey to return the ashes of his father, decorated war hero, Sgt. Major Alfred E. Kirchenbauer, to their final resting place at the White River in Al's boyhood hometown of Hesperia, Michigan. In tribute, Bill stops to visit people and places that were connected to his father, offering a mix of amusing stories and heartfelt memories.
Starring the remains of Sgt. Major Alfred E. Kirchenbauer (his ashes in a box) with his son as narrator, Bill light-hearteldly navigates and narrates, often veering off the beaten path between Austin, Texas and Hesperia, Michigan. . . capturing scenes and situations that would have surely entertained his father who was known to enjoy a good party for any reason. The box goes everywhere and is featured during the journey. The pair stop at some of Al's favorite watering holes and meet up at a VFW post with a group of war vets from Michigan, including several from the campaign in New Guinea. Directed by Tom Hester.
